Lightning caused from different of electropotential between Cloud and Ground. The air is strong in electrical resistance and separate the difference potential to travel from Cloud to Ground and vice versa. For stream of electricity to short circuit from Cloud to Ground it require a channel. Mostly the channel provided by dist, vapour and rain. When the condition is right, the elctricity may jump from cloud through ground.
Many misunderstanding in wearing of metal object, using cell phone or hold an umbrella cause the mortality of lightning strike. The effect of such conductance is merely in the range of centimetre. A capacitor of 150,000 Volts may cause electricity jump only to metal object at few cm distance. It's my lesson learn overy college day in Ball lightning experiment. During that experiment I use sand to provide the channel for the spark.
The danger of lightning is upon the travel of electricity through our body. A bird can stay on power line because the electricity had no channel to go through the bird. But if same bird grab other power line then the electricity would travel through bird to another power line and cause mortality. Same as electricity guy wearing gum boot to prevent electricity to go through them to ground because gum boot is electricity resistance. For safety guide you may try following.
1) Don't stay too close to tall object like tree and lamp post, it lightning would strike nearby it would use the talling object as channel.
2) Try to stay away from electrical appliance over thunder storm. Power line is a conductor, it is a normal channel for electricity and if lightning would strike at your home it may use electricity channel to go through you.
3) Install lightning rod to provide channel to go through ground and not burn your house.
4) Car is a safe place, lightning strike through car and plane would have no path to go through you. However the hazard from tyre explosion was not taken to account.
5) Chance of person walk through thunder storm with or without umbrella is pretty much the same. Best, don't walk through thunder storm. Find your self shelter, have a cup of coffee and relax until thunder storm ease out.
